Our customer was looking to convert an airplane hangar at the Oklahoma Air and Space Port in Burns Flat, Oklahoma into a state-of-the-art aerospace paint booth. They needed to redesign the hangar, add square footage to the space, and convert the facility to accommodate paint finishing for narrow body commercial aircraft including Boeing and Airbus. Our team was designing the paint booth and ventilation systems they needed as well as collaborating with the contractor who would be managing the addition of the facility footprint.
The Challenge
The biggest challenge on this project was the size of the hangar. It wasn’t large enough to accommodate aerospace paint finishing, so we had to collaborate with the general contractor who was adding square footage to the original hangar. The hangar had to be lined with panels conducive to paint finishing and be expanded to fit aircraft that would be finished in the space. The ventilation was also a challenge, as there was no existing air filtration or ventilation system present, so we had to build makeup air and exhaust into the plans.
The Solution
Working with the general contractor, our team at Rohner was able to design and build a finishing system inside the new footprint of the hangar, including the equipment and air filtration needed to finish one narrow body aircraft at a time. The contractor added the panels required for paint finishing, while the Rohner team installed the ventilation and makeup air units needed. The customer was very happy and is already in the design phase for another hangar that will accommodate much larger aircraft in the future.
